Description
The Islamic Center of Flint will be holding a fundraiser for victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma this Friday, September 22nd, at 2:00 pm, following the weekly congregational prayer. The Islamic Center will be hosting Islamic Relief USA, which will be collecting and distributing aid to those still suffering in the affected areas. Shona Siddiqui, Outreach Coordinator for the Islamic Center, said that helping those most in need is a central tenet of Islam. “The Prophet Muhammad said that ‘Charity is prescribed for every descendant of Adam every day that the sun rises.’ Our prayers have been going out to the victims since the beginning, and we believe those have power. But we also need to open our pockets and share the resources God has given to us for exactly that purpose.” Islamic Relief USA was among 40 charitable organizations recommended by Charity Navigator, a not-for-profit that reviews the tax filings of not-for-profits and evaluates them based on a range of criteria, according to an article published in USA Today in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Islamic Relief USA earned a four star rating – higher than the American Red Cross. “It’s important to us that our contributions go to help those in need, and we’ve seen this organization doing valuable work for 25 years,” Siddiqui said. “People have lost so much, and no amount of charity can make everything as it was. But we will do what we can to help victims get through the worst, and begin to build their futures again.”
